Purpose: Acquisition of the basic surgical skills in thoracic surgery is one of the most fundamental and important subject in the medical students and training doctors. But it is not easy to get the right information exactly only with the education based on traditional method, because comprehensive knowledge based on systematic anatomy and physiology of the chest and surgical techniques is essential. The aim of this study was to develop a new teaching program of basic thoracic surgical skills using multimedia for better understanding.
Materials & Method: Among available teaching materials, text and picture-based lectures, movies on surgical procedures, and animations were decided to be included in this program. Firstly, we made lecture notes and powerpoint lecture system included in narration. Secondly, we made and edited movie files about surgical procedures, and incorporated sound in the movies. Thirdly, we developed animation files using flash 5.0 including all CPB procedure which is the most important procedure in cardiac surgery. Finally we made CD ROM and web page for CPB and other basic surgical techniques. Self-test about basic surgical procedures was included also. We evaluated this program for their efficiency and utility through questionnaires to the medical students.
Results: This educational program was distributed in CD-ROM. The homepage for the basic surgical procedures (http://surgery.chungbuk.ac.kr) was constructed and run by internet. The result of questionnaire was proved to be positive about the understanding of general view of thoracic surgery.
Conclusions: This multimedia program about the basic surgical skills in thoracic surgery can not only help medical students to easily understand the surgical orientation of thoracic surgery, but also give indirect experience on the practical surgical procedures.
